Lemon Balm Souls are Beautiful.

So, this post is for me.

Near and dear to my heart, few herbs have had more impact on me. During a particularly rough patch where I found out that my dad had been diagnosed with Frontal Temporal Dementia AND Parkinsons, I thought I might lose myself (in a bad way). By some chance visit to a wholesome co-op in Couer’Dalane, Idaho we were introduced. I had an enlightening discussion with a lovely woman who basically saved my life right then and there. Though she probably didn’t know that or had an inkling but didn’t let on to any such knowledge. We talked a little about the pure stress of the situation and she calmly walked down the aisles with me. I remember the store smelling of herbal EVERYTHING. I felt calmness easing in and wanted to set up my tent in that little shop. Then I learned about Lemon Balm. Now I will sing its praises to anyone who’ll listen.

Lemon Balm also known by its scientific name Melissa officinalis, is an herb that has been used for medicinal purposes for thousands of years. It is native to the Mediterranean region but is now widely cultivated in many parts of the world. My garden being one of those parts. 🙂 Watch out though, it’s a mint and as such will definitely spread.

Here are some common uses of lemon balm that you NEED to know about:

  1. Calming effects: Lemon balm has a calming effect on the body and is often used to treat anxiety, stress, and insomnia. It is believed to work by increasing levels of GABA, a neurotransmitter that helps to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation.
  2. Digestive aid: Lemon balm has been used to soothe digestive problems such as bloating, indigestion, and flatulence. It is thought to work by relaxing the muscles of the digestive tract and reducing inflammation.
  3. Cold sores: Lemon balm has antiviral properties and can be used topically to treat cold sores caused by the herpes virus.
  4. Cognitive function: Some studies suggest that lemon balm may improve cognitive function and memory, particularly in elderly individuals.
  5. Skin health: Lemon balm has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties and can be used topically to treat skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
  6. Menstrual cramps: Lemon balm has been traditionally used to ease menstrual cramps and regulate menstrual cycles.

Lemon balm is available in various forms, including tea, essential oil, tincture, and capsules. As with any herbal supplement, it’s important to consult with a healthcare professional before using lemon balm, especially if you’re pregnant, nursing, or taking medication.

My FAVORITE way to get lots of Lemon Balm fast is through New Chapter’s product, Lemon Balm Force. Secondly, I blend it into all my relaxation teas. Honestly, I find it hard to go wrong with this power plant spirit.
