Ready to get your green thumb limbered up? Sew these seeds in March!

Here I am, gazing out the window at the sun. A few days ago, I was gazing out at three inches of snow. It melted that same day, but it was certainly indicative of the Winter wishy washiness of our lush wonderful PNW. However, that hasn’t stopped me from organizing new and saved seeds for the minute the forecast is set to no longer send us morning frosty grass. I thought perhaps I would share what I have in the queue to seed outdoors within the next two weeks. I am in Zone 8b, so hopefully that helps you plan accordingly if you are in a different zone. If you simply can’t wait, then be prepared to cover the beds at night so they don’t frost over.

In Zone 8b, which typically has mild winters and relatively warm temperatures, March marks the beginning of the growing season. Here are some seeds that you can sow outdoors in March in Zone 8b:

  1. Lettuce: Lettuce seeds can be sown directly into the garden in March. Choose varieties suited for early planting.
  2. Spinach: Spinach is another cool-season crop that can be sown outdoors in March. Look for varieties that are resistant to bolting in warmer temperatures.
  3. Peas: Peas can be planted in March as they are cold-tolerant and can withstand cool temperatures.
  4. Radishes: Radishes are quick-growing and can be sown directly into the garden in March for an early harvest.
  5. Carrots: Carrot seeds can be sown directly into the soil in March. Choose varieties that are suitable for early planting.
  6. Beets: Beets can be sown directly into the garden in March. They are tolerant of cooler temperatures.
  7. Kale: Kale is a cold-hardy vegetable that can be sown outdoors in March. It can tolerate a light frost. I have some Kale stems that I cut the leaves off, they are now starting to show signs of budding. Fun!
  8. Chard: Chard seeds can be sown directly into the garden in March. Choose varieties suited for early planting.
  9. Turnips: Turnips are another root vegetable that can be sown outdoors in March. They prefer cooler temperatures.
  10. Arugula: Arugula is a quick-growing green that can be sown directly into the garden in March.

Remember to check your local climate conditions and adjust planting times accordingly. Additionally, consider using row covers or other protective measures if there’s a risk of late frosts in your area. If you have any other ideas on early vegetables to plant, please share.
